Intro
These peaces were the end result of my edges and abstraction project. before we get to the final peaces I'm going to go into detail about what I have learned in this project, who influenced me and how my experimentation helped me make this project good.
Who influenced me in my edges work
I was influenced Robert frank and Lorenzo Vitturie in my edges work because they used edges in different ways. Frank used mirrors and dark imagery and vitturie used odd sculptures which Made the edges of the shape different. (I have written about both of them on my edges page)I found these two photographers because my photography teacher suggested them to the class so I decided to take a look and I began to like there work. My favourite peace from frank is "sick of goodbys" and I like it because of the dark imagery and how it represents death. From his work I have learned that you can present different things in so many different ways and that if you present something in one way it could end up being presented in a different way. The first thing i thought with franks work it was that i didn't really like the look of the work but i got what the meaning was instantly."sick of goodbys" stood out to me because of the way he took the photo with an arm holding a small skeleton in front of a mirror and it says "sick of goodbys" on the mirror gives really good imagery about death and how he is sick of losing people to it. My favourite peace from vitturie is "Red1" I like it because of the way the sculpture looks and how it is made out of normal objects and ends up looking really odd. From this one I learned that a very simple thing can have a lot of depth to it and how different people have different perspectives on things. My first thoughts when i saw vitturies theme was the opposite of my first thoughts when i saw franks work. i liked the way the photos looked but i wasn't sure what the meaning behind the work was. I liked the title "red1" because it made me think that there could be a red2 or red3 and it started a chain of ideas you can see on my website.
Experimentation in edges
To experiment with the edges project it was a lot easier than the abstraction project because nearly every photograph you take has edges in it. I started my experimentation by taking a range of photos of mirrors and seeing how the reflection from the mirror made new edges for the photo. I also focused on the actual edges of the mirror. Then i moved on to scrunching up peaces of paper and taking close up photos of them and seeing the edges on the paper and how random they were. After that i started putting different colour foils over a torch light and taking the photos with different colours. After this i started doing " photo shoots" where i would go out and take photos of anything i could. I ended up doing five photo shoots. I could take photos of anything because every photo i took there would be loads of edges in them. The fact that there are so many edges everywhere made this project easy and a lot of fun to do.
Who influenced my abstraction work
In my abstraction work i had listed listed a few abstract photographers in a slideshow but my main interest in abstract photography was Masahisha fukase. He was a photographer who took photos of cracks on the street, I found him again because my photography teacher suggested him and his work caught my eye. i liked his work because of the colour he would add to he cracks and i also liked how the cracks were so random and didn't have a pattern to them. What was also interesting was that he didn't make the cracks. He just found them on the street. I learnt from his work that even something so irrelevant as a crack on a pavement can be turned into a work of art. And i learned that some of the best things can come from the most unlikely places.
Experimenting in abstraction
To start of my experimentation i made "abstract photo shoot 1" . In this Photo shoot i went around the school taking photos that i wouldn't normally take. I took them out of focus, I took them with only bits of it in focus and I took some at really odd angles. After that i made a second abstract photo shoot over a frozen bit of water in my school. After that my class had a workshop where we cut out projection slides and stuck them on top of each other to make different out comes. And after that workshop i began to get interested in glitch photography. i downloaded an app and made a wide range of glitch photos that ended up on my final peace for abstraction. This project was very enjoyable for me because i was in a god frame of work so i could just get on with what i wanted to and really focus on my work and the outcome i wanted to provide.
