Discarded items.
"Discarded items sometimes create hazardous pollution, as David Attenborough showed in blue planet, and they can sometimes be the source of creative ideas. Eian Kantor has recorded discarded items in a series of photographs called ‘Found Sculptures’. In the project ‘some cities and mountains,’ Anthony Gerace produced photographs that record discarded items and aspects of neglect in the environment.Morgan Z Schultz created a short film with animation entitled ‘Discarded’ about the items people leave behind."
Why I chose discarded items.
I chose discarded items because I find it interesting how something that someone threw away can be used and made into art. Even though these things may not have there original value anymore we as artists and photographers can make these discarded things have value and give them some worth.
"some cities and mountains"- Anthony Gerace
Anthony Gerace is a photographer from London. He travelled to America and took a lot of pictures. Here is some of his work
I really like this photographers approach on discarded items. I like how he mixes nature and architecture and I like how he presents discarded items. The objects that he photographs aren't really discarded because a lot of them are natural. A lot of these "discarded" items are buildings witch are more vacant then discarded. And buildings aren't items so they can't be discarded items. But I understand that the photographer was trying to show us that anything can be "discarded" and most things at one time or another have been.
My thoughts on the work are that I really like it and how it was taken. I like how the discarded items are presented and how they look in general. I like the colours he uses in the photos and I really like the locations where he took the photos. I like how the photos don't have any people in them and how it makes the town look abandoned.

Morgan z schultz-Discarded
This is a video made by Morgan Z Schultz named "discarded"
Morgan schult has a very interesting approach to discarded items. He approaches them in a way that kind of makes them look lonely. The best example of this is when you're shown a staircase going down into a basement and there is a teddy of an elephant. The elephant looks lonely and kind of sinister in a way. The fact that the teddy is propped up against the railing in a dark abandoned basement makes the atmosphere more sadistic and threatening.
My thoughts on the video are that I like how the video was animated and I like how the video presents discarded items and how the items are cast out. I like how it shows us that the items are just sat there perfectly still. it makes you think that that is happening everywhere in the world right now. And it makes you think how still the world can be sometimes.

"Found sculptures"-Eian kantor
Eian kantor is a photographer from brooklyn, new york. Here Is some of his work
I like this photographers approach to discarded items because I think it is interesting and unique. He approaches it in a kind of similar way as I want to. He is trying to make insignificant items have significants and make them more then they are. By taking a photo of the discarded items you are giving it a purpose and it makes it the centre of attention rather than just being rubbish that no one wants. I think that everything can be given a purpose if you put enough effort into giving it one. weather or not its through photography, art or any other media it can still happen and make sense.
My thoughts on the work are that I really like it. I like how well Kantor took the photos and how he has given them a purpose. I also like how ascetically pleasing the work is and that every photo is unique. His work has given me ideas on how I can photograph discarded items in new different ways and I am defiantly going to use his work as an example.

Peter Fraser's Everyday icons and Nazraeli Monograph.
I like Frasers work because the things he is taking photos of are just normal objects and there isn't really anything interesting about them. But he takes the photos in a way that makes the objects interesting. its not that these items are discarded, its that no one is paying attention to them. And when he took that photo he brought attention to them.

These are scrunched up photos of the discarded items. I really like these because the orange floor makes them stand out and makes them look really nice.
my plan is to print these off and take photos of them on a green floor. Then I'm going to take them to the studio and use a macro lens to photo graph them really up close. |
These pictures are of scrunched up versions of the photos above. I like these photos because in some of them the paper is extremely of centre. And again I like it because it stands out.
I have decided to now take these photos scrunch them up and take a photo of them on a yellow floor. Then after that ill scrunch all of these photos up and take them into the studio and take really zoomed in photos of all of them. |
These are scrunched up photos of the photos above. I like these because the green works really well with yellow and it helps the photos really stand out.
Now I am going to scrunch all of these photos up go into the studio dim the lights put the flash on my camera use a micro lens and take photos of all of these so they look big and important unlike discarded items. |
The outcome
These are the photos I took in the studio. They look abstract and I really like how they came out.
Threshold images
Sculpture of threshold images.
Coloured card photoshoot
I took photos of all of the 8 coloured photos that I made. I took them at weird angles and I think they came out really well. Now I am going to frame all of them and take photos of them by actual discarded items.
Typography threshold photos
I was thinking about having several of the same photo on one page. But i scraped the idea because I'm planing to take the photos from far away and if I did that with several one page you wouldn't be able to see the photo.
What i am doing for my exam
I am going to make a typography with anywhere from 5 to 10 images. The images are going to be of the coloured threshold images in picture frames. I'm going to take the framed pictures to a grassy area in the school and photograph them individually. after this i will get them onto my laptop, possibly edit them and print them off. After that i will put them in what ever order i feel fits the final peace best.
Plan for the first day of the exam.
Hour 1: I will Make sure I have everything I need, start the powerpoint and decide which ten photos are the best
Hour 2: Then i willPrint out the best outcomes, take photos of them and put them on the powerpoint. Then write about what I've done.
Hour 3: when I get back ill go out with the pictures in the frames and take the 10 photos I will use on the mount board for my peace.
Hour 4: After that I will get the photos onto my laptop, put them onto my powerpoint and write about them.
Hour 5: After lunch I will make sure everything is there ready for me to put onto the mount board and refine it and make sure it is good.

Plan for the second day of the exam.
Hour 1: I will Refine what i wrote on the powerpoint on day 1 and make sure its good enough to give to the examiner.
Hour 2: Then I will decide where to put the pictures on the mount board.
Hour 3: Then I will spray mount the pictures onto the mount board.
Hour 4: Then I will photograph the peace and put it on my powerpoint.
Hour 5: For the final hour i will make sure the powerpont is done and done to a good standard.
